Michael Jordan became Michael Jordan because of the Olympics.
Jordan reflected on his 1984 and 1992 Olympic experiences on the latest episode of NBA’s “Jordan: Insights,” airing on NBC and Peacock.

“It’s very sincere,” he said of playing for the national team. “There’s no money involved. It’s pure passion and dedication to the country and the game.”
The 1984 Los Angeles Games took place in the summer between Jordan’s final year at North Carolina and his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls. He was unknown internationally at the time.
Under coach Bobby Knight, Jordan leads the team with 17.1 points per game, and Team USA outscores its eight opponents by an average of 32 points per game.

Bobby Knight made Michael Jordan cry at the Olympics. Then Jordan earned Knight’s ultimate respect with a simple note.
In 1992, despite Jordan’s back-to-back NBA championships, some still considered Magic Johnson to be more famous globally – even though Jordan shared billboard covering building With Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergey Bubka in Barcelona.
Jordan averaged 14.9 points per game (second only to Charles Barkley’s 18 points), and the Dream Team outscored eight opponents by an average of 43.8 points per game.
Jordan pointed out one contrast between the two Olympics: accommodations.
“Representing your country, feeling the energy of America in ’84, staying in the (athlete) village and understanding and spending time with all the other athletes and seeing their passion and effort,” he said. “In ’92, we rented out the whole hotel. We were away from everyone. We had police escorts going back and forth to events. It was a completely different experience. I mean, if you had to ask me which one was my favorite, it was ’84.”

In 2028, the Olympics will return to Los Angeles. The Olympic men’s basketball tournament has become more competitive since the “Dream Team” — the U.S. won bronze in 2004, lost another group game in 2021, and led by three points in the 2024 gold medal game before a series of Stephen Curry 3-pointers with 3 minutes remaining.
What does Jordan think of LA28?
“Basketball is so powerful in America,” he said, “I don’t think we deserve to lose.”
