“So I think I was very calm from the beginning [last Friday],” Buie said. “I thought my alarm was really good and then all my teammates were around me and the energy was really high. So I feed off their energy, so I feel really calm going into the vault and I’m pretty confident that I’m going to be able to do a pretty good vault. “

That confidence was on display again tonight when Buie competed on vault as the Florida Gators defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 197.425 to 197.275 to improve their record to 4-0.

“After I finished my vault, obviously I got a pretty good score,” Buie said. “I think that sets a trend for others and continues throughout the conference.”

This confidence is earned. Last season came quickly.

“I think I have a lot more experience than last year because last year I came in about two weeks ago,” Buie said. “So I’m just trying to get used to the groove of it. I’ve been here all preseason this year.”

Being only 16 at the time, it was even more difficult to adapt.

“I don’t know if it was intimidation, but I think when I first got here it was definitely hard to fit in because I didn’t really know anyone,” Buie said. “But right now I would say we have a great relationship with everyone on the team. And I think we all have a really strong bond.”

This connection helped stabilize her at this time.

“I feel a lot more comfortable being in the O’Dome with them, and I think it’s boosted my confidence as well,” she said.

Even now, growth is part of the equation.

“I’m only 17. I haven’t really stopped growing,” Bui said. “So I just have to give myself some grace.”
