McGlynn on Naysmith, busy period and being ‘two games from Hampden’

Falkirk head coach John McGlynn speaks to the media ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Cup fifth round tie against Stenhousemuir (BBC Scotland Live).

Here are the key lines:

  • McGlynn believes rival Gary Naismith performed “really well” against Stenhousemuir, who are top of the competition against the full-time side, and said promotion to the Championship would be “amazing”.

  • The manager admitted that “the fact that it’s a derby game does make it bigger, and the fact that it’s a Scottish Cup game makes it a potential banana skin”, adding that “anything can happen”.

  • He said Stenhousemuir’s last cup result – a 4-0 win over champions Morton – showed they “can deal with this and they’re not fools”.

  • McGlynn is not worried about Falkirk being favorites as they had experience of that in both the league and the Championship last season.

  • On team news: “One or two minor bumps and bruises, not quite sure if we’re going to keep everyone who played that night”. Ben Parkinson, Ross McKeever, Ethan Williams and Gary Oliver are all absent.

  • McGlynn admitted a busy period “will test the team” but highlighted the extent of individual improvement, particularly forward Barney Stewart.

  • McGlynn revealed his message to the players was “you’re still two games away from Hampden” and if they can reach the final stages of the cup it could be “an absolutely amazing season”.
