Mass Pike speed restricted amid blizzard-like conditions, motorists stranded

Driving speeds on the Massachusetts Turnpike from the New York border to Boston were limited to 40 mph due to the snowstorm, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Several vehicles were stranded on Route 140 in Mansfield Monday morning, according to a 7:30 a.m. post on the Mansfield Police Department Facebook page.

“In the past 30 to 60 minutes we have responded to over a dozen calls of cars stuck in the snow. Please avoid travel if possible,” the post read.

Several tow truck drivers were helping to tow away the car.

Swing lanes at the Sumner Tunnel in Boston and HOV lanes on Interstate 93 between Boston and Quincy have been eliminated, according to the post.

The Registrar of Motor Vehicles was closed on Monday and all road testing was cancelled. The EZDriveMA walk-in customer service center is also closed, according to an agency post on X.

A damaging nor’easter is expected to linger in Massachusetts through much of Monday.

A blizzard warning is in effect for all of eastern, central and southern Massachusetts and is expected to last until 7 a.m. Tuesday. During this time, communities in these areas could see 18 to 25 inches of snow and experience wind gusts up to 75 mph.

The National Weather Service warned that 2-3 inches of snow per hour will continue to fall in southeastern Massachusetts until about 11 a.m. Monday. Thereafter, snowfall levels are expected to drop to 1-2 inches per hour by Monday afternoon.
