Marvel Rivals, NetEase’s Free-to-Play Superhero Shooter, Reaches 20 Million Players Within 11 Days of Launch

Free-to-play superhero PvP shooter Marvel Rivals has attracted 20 million players in less than two weeks since its release, developer NetEase Games confirmed on Tuesday. The Overwatch-inspired 6v6 team-based shooter reached the milestone in just 11 days after launching on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on December 6. The live-streaming service game is popular for its rich cast of Marvel superheroes and fast-paced gameplay.

Marvel Rivals reaches 20 million players

NetEase, the Chinese studio that develops and publishes Marvel Rivals, announced the news on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. “We are excited to announce that 20 million players have joined Marvel Rivals! We would like to express our sincere gratitude to each of you!” the company said through the official Marvel Rivals account.

To mark the occasion, the studio has also released a commemorative spray that includes the milestone number. In-game items are now online, and players can log in to collect them from December 20th to January 10th.

“Marvel Rivals” reached 10 million players within 72 hours of release. Player counts are measured via Steam and the Epic Games Store on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.

Winter Celebration Update

NetEase also plans to launch a content update for Marvel Rivals during the holiday season. The studio said earlier this week that the Winter Celebration update will bring special holiday-themed outfits, new game modes, and a few surprises.

The update will add a new game mode called Jeff’s Winter Splash, as well as a special winter greeting card with a gift from Jeff the Land Shark. Winter Celebration will be available starting at 11pm PST on Thursday, December 19th (12:30pm IST on Friday).

Marvel Rivals launches as a free-to-play game on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on December 6. The game allows players to compete in squad-based 6v6 matches on different maps, much like Overwatch. Marvel Rivals currently has 33 Marvel comic characters, including Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Star-Lord, Venom, Wolverine and other popular superheroes.
