LOS ANGELES — The Miami Marlins acquired outfielder Estere Ruiz from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night in exchange for minor league right-hander Adriano Marrero.
The speedy Ruiz led the American League in stolen bases with 67 for the Athletics in 2023. In four major league seasons with four teams, he has a career batting average of .241 but excelled as a baserunner and defensive player.

The Dodgers acquired Ruiz from the Athletics last April, and while he was in the majors, he was a rarely used reliever. Two consecutive World Series champions. Ruiz batted .190 in 19 games with Los Angeles, primarily as a defensive reliever or pinch-runner.
The Marlins designated infielder Eric Wagaman to clear up the 40-man roster for Ruiz. The trade leaves a spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
A capable backup outfielder, Ruiz could be the Marlins’ replacement for Dane Myers, who was traded to Cincinnati last weekend.
