Mariners in the process of acquiring All-Star Brendan Donovan from Cardinals, AP source says

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners are acquiring All-Star infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals, a person familiar with the matter tells The Associated Press.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the two teams had not yet finalized the deal.

Donovan, 29, made his first All-Star appearance last year when he hit .287 with home runs, 50 RBIs and a .775 OPS. Over his four-year major league career, Donovan hit .282 with a .772 OPS, 40 homers, and 97 doubles. Donovan also won a utility player Gold Glove as a rookie in 2022.

It’s unclear which players will be traded to the Cardinals or whether other teams are involved. The Tampa Bay Rays are involved in a three-team trade, according to the Seattle Times.

Donovan has a one-year contract worth $5.8 million, is eligible for arbitration again next winter and is expected to become a free agent after the 2027 World Series.

He could move into the middle of the Mariners’ batting order like Jorge Polanco did last year. Polanco hit 26 home runs before becoming a free agent and signing a two-year contract worth $40 million with the New York Mets.

Last year Seattle was one win away from the franchise’s first World Series appearance. ___
