Marco Odermatt secures World super-G title as unfavorable weather cancels both races this weekend

COURCHEVILLE, France (AP) — Marco Odermatt won the World Cup super-G title for the fourth consecutive season on Sunday.

The Swiss star won’t have to race this weekend, though, as two scheduled super-G events in the French Alps were canceled due to snow.

Odermatt holds a 158-point lead over runner-up Vincent Kriechmayr of Austria in the individual standings at next weekend’s World Cup final in Norway.

A game win is worth 100 points.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation said hours before the event was scheduled to start that organizers had canceled Sunday’s event because “unfortunately, it is unsafe to compete on the slopes.”

Saturday’s game was canceled due to heavy fog and persistent snowfall, and neither game has been rescheduled as the season ends next week.

Odermatt has won two of the six super-G events this season and is the only racer with multiple wins in the event.

After finishing third in Friday’s downhill race, he added the super-G globe to his list of locked-up overall and downhill titles. He is also the favorite to win the giant slalom next week.

Odermatt has won these four Ballon d’Ors in each of the past two years.
