Man Utd need to strengthen in January – Given

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given told BBC Radio 5’s Football Daily podcast that reinforcements during the January transfer window are crucial for Manchester United:

“I don’t think the team is strong enough. They need to bring in more players. Will they bring in players under a caretaker coach?

“I still think it has a lot of appeal. Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and a lot of players around the world still think that.

“I would also look at the league table and it’s an opportunity. If you can put any kind of [run of] If you put the results together, three or four wins in the next six games, you can play in the Champions League again and then you can recruit players again in the summer.

“If you don’t recruit in January you could be in trouble again and then take another season or 18 months before you can play again.

“This season seems to be a good chance for any team to reach the Champions League [qualification spots].

“I’m even thinking that they must think they have to strengthen because they have a chance of getting back into the Champions League, whether that’s under a caretaker manager or whoever.

“I think they need to step up again to give themselves a chance.”
