Interim boss Darren Fletcher made a frustrating start to the campaign with a 2-2 draw against Burnley, who currently sit 19th in the Premier League table.

It remains to be seen whether the former midfielder will take over until the end of the season, with other names such as Solskjaer also being linked.

Whatever decisions are made by United’s hierarchy, they need to be done quickly. The Red Devils are currently seventh, three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

Michael Owen has named one candidate Manchester United should avoid in an interview with EPL Index…

Manchester United warn against Southgate rumors

One of the names being linked is former England manager Gareth Southgate, but Owen believes it would be a step in the wrong direction.

“You look at Southgate because he’s a name that’s been bandied about a lot but it’s strange for him. He’s done well for England but his club career goes back to his days at Middlesbrough,” Owen said.

“I think, overall, it’s not going to be a popular appointment with the fans and that has to be taken into account,” Owen continued. “I don’t think he’s going to be attractive. He’s the most successful England manager for a long time, but is the style of play attractive?”

“United need a certain style of play and I think there will be a lot of doubt around him,” Owen said.

“On the other hand, he’s a very smart guy and he can definitely be the guy that can run a club of that size and get them back on track,” Owen continued, “but, like I said, I don’t think a lot of fans would agree with that.”
