LOS ANGELES (AP) — A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of throwing a Molotov cocktail at a Los Angeles federal building, authorities said Tuesday. No one was injured.
A statement from the Department of Homeland Security said security guards heard a man yelling derogatory remarks about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement outside the downtown building on Monday.
He then threw two incendiary devices at the guards, the department said.
“Fortunately, the bottles were not ignited and did not catch fire, and there was no injury or damage to federal property,” a Department of Homeland Security statement said.
FBI agents arrested Jose F. Jovel of Los Angeles, FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller said. Federal prosecutors are expected to file criminal charges on Tuesday, she said.
It was unclear Tuesday whether Jowell had an attorney. The federal public defender’s office did not immediately respond to a call asking if one of its attorneys was representing him.
A Department of Homeland Security statement said Jowell had four knives on him when he was arrested and had an “extensive criminal record,” including an attempted murder charge in 1987.
Messages were sent to the U.S. Attorney’s Office seeking additional details.
