Man accused of stealing car with elderly person in the backseat in Long Island City

Police are searching for a suspect accused of stealing a car in Queens while an elderly man was in the back seat.

The car theft occurred around 7:15 p.m. Saturday near 44th Avenue and 23rd Street in Long Island City.

According to the New York Police Department, the driver of a 2016 Subaru idled the car with a 72-year-old man in the back seat in order to enter a store. When the driver entered the store, the suspect jumped into the car and fled with the car and people.

Police later found the vehicle and the 72-year-old passenger near 53rd Avenue and 44th Street. The suspect fled before police arrived at the scene.

No one was injured in the theft.

Authorities are currently trying to determine what led to the incident.
