A surfer’s life has been saved thanks to the quick action of a friend.

On February 6, a 26-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was thrown from his board by a huge wave while surfing near Haskell Beach in Goleta, California. Los Angeles Times reported.

The surfer was then dragged out to sea by the current, and when his board washed ashore, the man’s friend called 911 to report him missing, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBCFD). era.

After officials received the call – which they said was “a move that changed everything” – they arrived at the beach and deployed an infrared drone. Officers later located the surfer about a quarter-mile away and directed rescue swimmers to him, the SBCFD said.

The surfer was eventually found clinging to a lobster trap buoy while awaiting rescue. The SBCFD shared video of the rescue on Instagram.

The SBCFD posted on X that after the surfer returned safely to land, he said he did not require medical attention and was released.

Cal Fire thanked “this quick-thinking friend” as well as the “dedicated firefighters and life-saving drone technology.”

The SBCFD, which oversees the large West Coast county, added: “The surfer finally made it home safely.”
