Majority of Americans don’t believe Trump administration is ‘putting America first,’ new poll shows

(WHTM) – A majority of Americans don’t trust President Donald Trump’s administration to stick to the president’s “America First” campaign message, according to a new national poll from Emerson College.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters found that 53% of voters don’t trust the government to “put America first,” compared with 42% who say so.

The share of voters who don’t believe America is prioritized has increased from 41% in March 2025.

A majority of Americans (51%) also disapprove of the president’s job performance; however, dissatisfaction with him has risen four points since last month. His approval rating dropped one percentage point from last month’s poll, to 42%.

A majority of voters (47%) also oppose U.S. military action in Iran; 76% of Democrats, 51% of independents and 16% of Republicans oppose the war.

The economy remains voters’ top concern (34%), followed by threats to democracy (19%), down 11 points from February.

Nationally, Democrats remain favored in the general congressional vote test, leading Republicans 49 percent to 42 percent.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and former Vice President Kamala Harris are also largely unpopular with voters. 55% of voters dislike Schumer and 47% dislike Harris.

Harris remains popular with Democrats, with an approval rating of 79%, while Democrats are widely divided on Schumer, with 38% approval, 31% unsure and 30% disapproval.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear are more popular in national polls than elsewhere.

The poll’s complete results and methodology can be found on the Emerson College Poll website.
