Maine Democratic candidate Graham Plattner promised he would be “arrested” as a U.S. senator if he won the election, but Republicans retained control of the House.
Plattner held his first campaign event after Maine Gov. Janet Mills announced she was withdrawing from the Democratic primary, making Plattner the presumptive nominee for the November election.
While Plattner expressed confidence that Democrats can wrest control of the Senate from Republicans in November, he encouraged Democratic senators to promote an “activist element” in their roles by participating in protests.

“If we don’t get a majority and things continue to get worse, I guarantee you that I will be arrested as a United States senator,” Plattner said.
The comments were similar to previous instances in which Democratic politicians have expressed concerns that President Donald Trump would use law enforcement weapons against them.

On October 15, U.S. Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Plattner delivered a speech at the Franco Center Town Hall in Lewiston, Maine.
During the event, Plattner reiterated his plan to “shut down the White House” and use the Senate’s investigative powers to hinder the Trump administration.
“Day after day we subpoenaed everyone in the White House to Senate committees to answer questions about all the illegal things they had done,” Plattner said, adding that the case for impeachment and removal of “at least two” Supreme Court justices was “compelling.”

Plattner ran a controversial campaign, including being the subject of numerous controversies, such as accusations that his tattoo resembled the Nazi SS emblem “Totenkopf.”
Graham Platner, a U.S. Senate candidate from Maine, has faced multiple controversies for deleting Reddit posts and having a tattoo that resembles a Nazi symbol.
He also faced backlash for several old posts on Reddit in which he called himself a “communist,” criticized rape victims and praised Hamas attacks that killed at least five Israeli soldiers.

Plattner has apologized multiple times for his controversies and even apologized for his response to the controversy after he used the “r-word” in an interview.
