ESPN’s SEC analyst Paul Finebaum, also known as the “Modern Mouth of the South,” believes a reckoning is underway. In fact, he thinks the Southeastern Conference (SEC) may never again reach the heights it reached for much of the 21st century. Finebaum’s revelation comes after Mississippi State failed to reach the College Football Playoff finals for the third consecutive season after being defeated by Miami in the CFP semifinals of this year’s postseason.
“There’s a reckoning going on,” Finebaum said on the Matt Barrie Show podcast earlier this week, On3 reported. “I was walking around my neighborhood (in Birmingham) on Saturday afternoon and an Alabama fan — a nice lady who’s very well-known in Alabama circles — said, ‘I’m starting to think that if Oregon loses by 34 points and we only lose to Indiana by 35, that’s not too bad.’ I said, ‘Come on, you can’t measure your program like that. “But that’s where things got weird.”

Strange indeed, Paul.
