‘Long-duration’ heat wave to sweep San Diego County, advisory issued

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – Forecasters are warning of hot weather in parts of San Diego County over the coming week, prompting the National Weather Service to issue another heat advisory.

Meteorologists noted that the advisory will affect coastal and inland valley communities as a “long-lasting early-season heat wave” moves into Southern California.

The heat advisory will begin at 10 a.m. Monday and will last until 8 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists say temperatures this week will be well above seasonal averages. Expected highs include:

  • Close to the coast 80 to 90 degrees

  • 100 to 105 degrees in inland valley areas

Thursday and Friday are expected to be the hottest days, when temperatures could approach or break daily records.

The National Weather Service warns that high temperatures in the region could be 20 to 30 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Heat warnings are issued when temperatures are expected to be high enough to pose a health risk, especially for people who don’t have access to cooling or who spend extended periods of time outdoors.

While not as extreme as an overheat warning, the warning suggests the conditions could lead to heat-related illness, especially during prolonged periods of hot weather.

Officials urge residents to take precautions during the heat wave and offer the following tips:

  • Stay in air-conditioned areas as much as possible

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight

  • Check on relatives, neighbors and vulnerable residents

  • Limit outdoor activities during the hottest times of the day

In addition, workers who are active outdoors are advised to take frequent breaks in a cool or air-conditioned area.

Anyone showing signs of heat stroke should move to a cooler area immediately, officials said. Heat stroke is considered a medical emergency, so you should call 911 if necessary.

This heat wave comes on the heels of another last week that broke multiple temperature records in San Diego County on Friday.
