Logan Thompson backstops Capitals to 2-1 win over the Devils

WASHINGTON (AP) — Logan Thompson made 30 saves and missed a buzzer-beating chance with 43 seconds left and the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1 on Friday night.

Leonard scored midway through the first period and Aliakse Protas scored an empty-net goal with 1:43 left.

Jesper Bratt scored for the Devils, extending his winning streak with three goals and four assists in his past seven games. Jake Allen stopped 26 shots.

This is the third meeting between the two teams and the first that does not require overtime. The Devils defeated the Capitals 3-2 in a shootout on November 15, but lost 4-3 in overtime on December 27. Thompson and Allen have scored in all three games. They will conclude their season series on April 2 in Newark.
