Leicester appoint Rowett until end of season

Championship contenders Leicester City have confirmed former player Gary Rowett as their new manager until the end of the season.

BBC Radio Leicester reported earlier that the 51-year-old, who was sacked as Oxford boss two months ago, trained with the Foxes on Wednesday.

Rowett replaces Marty Cifuentes, who was sacked three weeks ago, and his first game in charge will be against Stoke City on Saturday.

Leicester City are third from bottom in the Championship, two points from safety with 14 games remaining.

Rowett told the club’s website: “I’m extremely proud to be Leicester City’s new manager and to have the opportunity to work with and lead a really talented squad over the coming months.”

“We all know what we need to achieve between now and the end of the season and work starts immediately.

“I’m looking forward to connecting with the players, club staff and fans – all of which are vital in helping us secure the results we need.”

Reuter joined the East Midlands from Birmingham City in 2000 and played for the East Midlands for two years. He had previously coached five English Championship teams.

He managed Birmingham, Derby County, Stoke City, Millwall and most recently Oxford, where he stayed for almost a year before being sacked in December 2025.

Former Foxes team-mate Callum Davison will serve as Reuter’s assistant.

Leicester have lost all four of their games under interim manager Andy King and were found guilty of breaching spending rules after a protracted legal battle and were docked six points during that period.

Point penalties, plus six defeats in seven games without a win, have seen Leicester fall into the relegation zone.

They dropped into the bottom three on Saturday, with Blackburn Rovers beating Queens Park Rangers to move above them, while the Foxes were knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton.

Foxes chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: “Gary is a manager with a deep understanding of the Championship and a wealth of experience of the situations we face in the final 14 games of the season, which is a fight for division survival.”

“This is a task that the whole club is focused on and we will provide Gary with all the support we need to find the solutions we need.

“I would like to thank Andy King for his professionalism and dedication in preparing the team for recent games in challenging circumstances.
