Heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, all the hype was surrounding USC quarterback Caleb Williams. Like most highly touted rookies, teams that find them love them while others can’t stand them.

Caleb Williams has been on a tear during his second season in Chicago, especially over the past few weeks, and people around the league are starting to take notice.

More: Caleb Williams’ throw to DJ Moore in overtime was not just a play on the game, it was part of the game. PFF feels the same way.

Of all the people aboard the Caleb Williams train, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is one of them.

Shanahan had incredibly high praise for Williams during an interview with the media before the team’s Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears.

Shanahan says Williams is one of the best quarterbacks he’s ever seen

It’s no secret that there are a handful of NFL coaches who only know the QB position at the next level. Kyle Shanahan is one of those offensive coaches.

He has consistently brought out the best in quarterbacks during his tenure in San Francisco, and his latest project is transforming “Mr. Irrelevant” Brock Purdy into a legitimate starting quarterback.

Shanahan had nothing but high praise when asked about Caleb Williams’ situation against him on Sunday.

“Caleb is one of the best throwers and the most athletic quarterbacks I’ve ever seen in terms of size, weight and speed,” Shanahan said. “He makes some great throws. He’s very scary on the outside. He can hold the ball temporarily — not in a bad way, but by creating things, which makes coverage have to go on forever.”

He’s seen the greatness in Williams, and rightfully so because he’s looked great the past few weeks.

The 49ers will be fighting for playoff survival when the two teams face off on Sunday. Unfortunately for San Francisco, I’m not sure Kyle Shanahan’s kind words were enough to prevent Caleb Williams from turning in another incredible performance.
