Manchester United midfielder Kobe Mainu has experienced many highs and lows in football during the early stages of his career. The Englishman scored a famous goal in the 2-1 win over Manchester City in the 2023/24 FA Cup final, leading fans to believe he would be the centerpiece of the Red Devils’ next great team.
Mainu rose through the ranks at Theater of Dreams before breaking into the first team under former head coach Erik ten Hag. The young midfielder’s impact was such that he started in England’s Euro 2024 final against Spain, but unfortunately the Three Lions lost 2-1.

However, with the dismissal of Ten Hag and the arrival of Ruben Amorim in November 2024, Mainu’s fortunes have changed dramatically. The 20-year-old was in and out of the starting XI under the Portuguese manager last season, but his situation has gone from bad to worse this term.
The Englishman failed to convince Amorim and was relegated to a supporting role, sparking rumors he could leave in the winter transfer window. However, the Portuguese’s sudden departure has added a welcome twist to his situation.
Stand out again in 2026
United chose to part ways with Amorim at the start of the year and appointed Michael Carrick as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. The Englishman immediately brought Mainu back into the fold and started him against Manchester City.

The youngster responded with an outstanding performance against Pep Guardiola’s side, helping the Red Devils take all three points. Subsequently, Mainu retained his place in the team, established a good partnership with Casemiro, and played a key role in the games against Arsenal and Fulham.

However, the Englishman’s future remains shrouded in doubt as his contract expires at the end of next season. A report previously forwarded by Le Mans claimed the Red Devils were planning to sign him to a new contract, and the latest news on his contract situation has now been released.

Manchester United prioritize renewing Mainoo’s contract
According to TEAMtalk , Mainoo’s contract extension is now a priority for United, with director of football Jason Wilcox directly involved in the matter. The report states: “Manchester United has begun to accelerate contract negotiations with midfielder Kobe Minu, with discussions set to take place this month,” TEAMtalk understands.
“It is reported that United director of football Jason Wilcox has been in contact with Mainu’s training camp to reassure the club of the club’s long-term vision for the academy graduate.”
“It is understood Wilcox has made it clear that it was his decision not to accept an offer for Mainu, even at a time when the youngster found himself falling out of favor under former manager Ruben Amorim.”

The report adds that the Red Devils are prepared to offer Mainu an improved contract, underscoring his importance to the team, and are confident a deal will be struck soon.
“There is an expectation that Manu will be offered a significantly improved contract, reflecting both his current influence and his projected importance to the squad. United consider this a business priority – and all signs point to it likely to move quickly.”
final thoughts
With Casemiro set to leave this summer and Bruno Fernandes turning 32 in September, Mainu could become key to United’s midfield succession plan. Even if the Red Devils invest heavily in the position at the end of the season, the club’s ability to retain the Englishman could have a huge impact on their pursuit of lost glory.
