King Charles and famous cricketers from around the world have been invited to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Melbourne’s first Test Test, officials said on Thursday. Even a year before the event, tickets were selling out quickly.
Australia will mark this historic milestone by taking on England under the lights at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from 11 to 15 March 2027.
The celebrations commemorate the first Test match between the two teams, which was also played at the MCG in 1877.
Players from the 1977 Centenary Test are expected to take part. Queen Elizabeth II attended that game and officials hope King Charles will visit in 2027.
“We have extended an invitation to the king or representatives through all the appropriate channels, including the UK government and the UK government,” Cricket Australia president Todd Greenberg told the Sydney Morning Herald. “It’s certainly high on our list.”
Cricket Australia has confirmed an invitation has been extended.
“We might schedule his visit a little bit earlier in the Test match because modern Tests might not last the full five days,”
“We will make sure there is royalty at the opening dance on the first day,” Greenberg added.
