BATON ROUGE, La. — Kim Mulkey wore a shiny purple jacket with a tiger head on Friday as she led LSU to a blitzing win over Jacksonville in the first round of the women’s NCAA tournament.
The outfit is another in a series of eye-catching outfits for the veteran coach.

Mulkey will be participating in some best-dressed competition when she walks the sidelines for Sunday’s game against Texas Tech.
While overall not as flashy as Mulkey’s outfit, Lady Raiders coach Krista Gerlich got a fashion stamp of approval from her players.
“I think every room she enters is automatically lit up,” says tech forward Julie Nekolná. “I really like her style.”

When Tech beat Villanova in the first round at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, Gerrich matched her team’s opponents in a silver pantsuit and navy blue top. Paired with black Christian Louboutin red-soled high heels, it has become teenager Jalynn Bristow’s favorite outfit this season.

Bristow said she appreciates how Gerrich’s style reflects their hometown.
“Personally, I love it,” Bristow said. “Being from Texas, the sparkle, the sequins, the whole look is always a big deal, especially for special occasions.”
However, Gerrich does not need a big game to show his strength.
“I feel like every game — casual games, scrimmages, whatever it is — she always shows up,” Bristow said. “They always say, look good, feel good, do good, and I think the coach always shows she’s ready.”
Shoes are often the finishing touch in Gerlich’s looks. Nekolner said a pair of silver, sparkly heels is one of her favorite items from the coach. Nekolná said Glich received them as a gift after Tech’s first win over Baylor this season.
“I think it’s the best costume of all the costumes she’s ever worn,” Nekolner said.
As for where Gerlich will go in the second round — Tech’s first since 2005 — even players don’t know. This is always a mystery, but one that players generally recognize.
“We’re always surprised,” Bristow said. “We have an idea (when) Christmas comes around. She might wear a necklace or a bracelet or earrings. Other than that, it’s just a surprise. We always tell her what we think about it, or whatever we think about it. 99 percent of the time it’s fine.”
