Kentucky set to hire Cal’s Allen Brown as cornerbacks coach

Kentucky football is expected to hire Cal defensive backs coach Allen Brown as its next cornerbacks coach, continuing the Wildcats’ busy offseason of reshaping the defensive staff, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Brandon Marcelo.

Brown recently returned to California as the Golden Bears’ defensive backs coach in January 2025 after spending a year coaching cornerbacks at Washington State. His impact at Cal was immediate, as the Bears ranked seventh nationally in fewest touchdown passes last season (10), a key metric in today’s pass-heavy college football landscape.

Brown served as a defensive analyst at Florida State in 2023 and previously spent time at Washington State, Eastern Washington State and Cal Poly before most recently heading to Berkeley. He also served as Cal’s defensive quality control coach for the 2022 season, making his return to the program familiar before Kentucky came calling.

After five coaching years, Brown has accumulated rich experience in developing middle school talents. He coached nine all-conference defensive backs, developed two All-American rookies, two All-Americans and helped develop an NFL draft pick, earning a reputation as a detail-oriented technician with a keen eye for player development.

A native of Tacoma, Wash., Brown graduated from Eastern Washington in 2014 and has steadily climbed the coaching ranks since then. If finalized, his hiring would add another proven recruiter and development staff member to Kentucky’s defensive staff as the Wildcats look to bolster their secondary in the SEC.
