WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A small town in south-central Kansas is without water due to a major water outage Friday.
The city of Algonia, about 20 miles west of Wellington, said shortly before 1pm that it could take several hours for water service to be restored.
Once this occurs, residents will be required to follow the boil water advisory issued by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Boil water alerts lifted for northern Kansas towns
The advisory said the contractor caused a water main break, causing a loss of pressure in the city’s water system. Lower pressure reduces chlorine in the water supply, increasing the risk of bacterial contamination.
Residents of Argonia, which has approximately 450 residents, should follow these guidelines until further notice:
-
Boil drinking or cooking water for one minute or use bottled water.
-
Dispose of the ice cubes and do not use ice from your home automatic ice maker.
-
If your tap water looks dirty, let it run until it runs clear.
-
Soak dishes in clean tap water containing 1 teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water for at least one minute.
-
There is generally no need to boil water for bathing. But you should supervise children to prevent them from swallowing the water. People with cuts or severe rashes may want to consult a doctor.
