The gold medal has always been controversial

Simon has been in the spotlight lately for some of the wrong reasons. For many, it was a bit surprising that Simon was competing at all.

In October, Simon was found guilty of theft and credit card fraud, the Associated Press reported. She is accused of stealing the bank cards of French biathlete Justine Braisaz-Bouchet and a French staff member and purchasing more than $2,700 worth of goods.

As a result, Simone was fined $17,450 for admitting the theft at a hearing, given a three-month suspended sentence and suspended by the French Ski Federation, which prevented her from competing in the World Cup in Ostersund, Sweden, at the end of November.
