Despite billions of dollars spent, Chelsea have made little progress on the pitch and BlueCo’s approach is now facing increased scrutiny. Juan Mata is one of the latest voices to join the ranks.
According to recent reports, Chelsea have spent nearly £3bn since Todd Boley and Clear Lake took over at Stamford Bridge. Much of it is used to recruit players.

While there is no doubt that Liam Roneyall has a squad full of potential, questions remain over whether he has the experience and leadership required to compete at the highest level.
Some young players were unfairly judged due to the team’s overall inexperience.
Juan Mata defends Chelsea and says other clubs are doing the same thing

Chelsea fans have been demanding that the club bring in more experienced players, especially at centre-back. Since Thiago Silva left in 2024, the team has struggled to fill the void left by Thiago Silva.
Mata was asked in an interview with Gabi Agbonlahor whether he thought Chelsea’s transfer strategy made sense. Rather than criticize, Mata chose to defend the club’s approach.

“I think it’s not just Chelsea. The world of football has changed. Every club wants to sign young players because they have the potential to get better and increase their market value,” Mata said.
He also said:
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Mata has discussed Chelsea this season. Earlier this year, he praised Liam Roney’s coaching style and willingness to allow for different personalities in the squad.
Chelsea reportedly set to change transfer strategy
Although there are plenty of centre-back options, none are older than 28. Tosin is the oldest, while Levi Colwell – one of the most experienced players in the group – missed the entire season due to injury.

While links with young defenders such as Honest Ahano and Tertati continue, reports suggest that BlueCo are now willing to bring in some older players to balance things out.
There are a number of younger targets – Jeremy Jacquet was linked in January – but names such as Kim Min-jae, Jules Kounde and Marcos Senesi have also emerged. Many fans hope for more experience on the defensive line.
