Bayern Munich ended up losing 2-1 to Augsburg in a Bavarian derby at the Allianz Arena, looking tired, flat and uncharacteristically uncharacteristic in the afternoon. Vincent Kompany’s side remain well ahead of the Bundesliga table but it is the nature of the defeat that is most worrying, not just the defeat itself.
After Hiroki Ito’s header in the 23rd minute, Bayern began to assert their authority and control over the game, but lacked the killer instinct in the final third that they have so often shown all season so far. Robin Fairhall hit the crossbar at the half-time whistle, setting the tone for the second half as Augsburg fought back to take them to a well-deserved three points away from home. A poorly defended corner resulted in a header from new Augsburg loanee Arthur Chavez, with Hannoa Masengo providing Bayern’s vital blow shortly afterwards.

After the game, Joshua Kimmich, who started as a substitute and came on midway through the second half, said they needed to take it on their chin and use their next Champions League game against PSV and then Hamburg to show the right reaction. “Today we had to fully accept that. What bothered me the most was the way it was handled. There was a bit of a lack of hunger. I’m looking forward to our response now,” the Bayern number six stressed (Bild).
Thankfully, Bayern are notorious for finishing strongly after dropping points, so this works in their favour, despite already guaranteeing their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. Kompany still won’t take PSV’s game lightly as he hopes to bring positive momentum to next weekend’s Bundesliga away game at Hamburg. By then, he is likely to welcome Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry and Rafael Guerrero back to the squad.
