Jim Jordan blames Democrats for 10 percent approval rating of Congress

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, blamed Democrats in a new Gallup poll for congressional approval, which fell to 10 percent.

The Ohio Republican blamed the minority party for the record-setting government shutdown in the fall during an interview with host Stuart Varney on Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Company.” The impasse stems from Democrats seeking to extend pandemic-era subsidies provided under the Affordable Care Act, which has yet to pass.

Jordan then lashed out at the Biden administration’s immigration policies and criticized Democrats for delaying funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats have sought reforms to the immigration enforcement process after federal officers shot and killed two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, in Minneapolis earlier this year, and the department has been operating without funding for more than two months.

“So, of course people are frustrated by the crazy things that Democrats are proposing and the crazy things that they’re doing,” Jordan said.

The Gallup poll, conducted April 1-15, found that 86% of 1,001 respondents disapproved of the way Congress was handling its work, tying an all-time high set four other times (December 2011, February 2012, November 2013 and November 2015).

In fact, according to Gallup polls, approval ratings in the Legislature have never been higher than disapproval in more than two decades. The last time the opposition rate in Congress fell below 60% was in May 2009.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jordan later noted that passing the legislation was a “tedious process,” but again blamed Democrats for why Americans are unhappy with Congress.

“It’s just part of how the founders designed this amazing thing that we call America to have checks and balances and to be the best government ever,” he told Varney. “But it’s still confusing at times. So, I understand that in a general sense.”

“But specifically, I think it’s the crazy policies of the Democrats that are driving Americans’ stance on Congress,” he added.
