CNN Jake Tapper Homeland Security officials reportedly advised the Federal Emergency Management Agency to avoid using the word “ice” as it continues to update the public on the upcoming winter storm, lest it encourage comparisons to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, quipping: “Another incredibly stupid story.”

Donald Trump FEMA is required to use the term “freezing rain” instead of “ice” in public messaging and social media posts about the upcoming winter weather event, with the path of the storm and ice expected to stretch more than 2,000 miles across the East Coast.
“The concern they have is that posting something like ‘Beware of the Ice’ will become a meme, a fodder for the internet, an opportunity for the public to laugh at the Department of Homeland Security,” Cohen explained. Renee Goode by immigration officials.
“When I talk to agency officials about this, part of the problem here is they say, ‘We’re talking about ice, we’re talking about saving lives,'” Cohen continued.
“When you say ‘freezing rain,’ I think, ‘Oh, I’m going to put on a raincoat.’ It doesn’t make me think ‘ice,'” Tapper said.
“This is primarily an ice storm,” Cohen clarified, stressing that “many states I’ve spoken to” have said they expect a “destructive ice storm” to cause widespread damage to power grids and roadways. “The Department of Homeland Security said ‘please avoid using this word,’ which is very noteworthy.”
Tapper summed up the Trump administration’s reasoning, saying: “Because they’re afraid of memes. Meanwhile, lives are at stake. Another incredibly stupid story.”
