Jackson Blake scores in shootout as East-best Hurricanes top Flyers 4-3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jackson Black scored in a shootout and the Eastern Conference-best Carolina Hurricanes beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Saturday night to open a homestand.

Seth Jarvis scored his 18th goal, Nicholas Ehlers and Alexander Nikisin also scored, and Shane Gostisbehere added two assists for the Hurricanes, who have won two consecutive penalty shootouts. Carolina has won three straight and six of eight games.

The team relocated to Raleigh, N.C., and played again Sunday night.

Bobby Brink, Trevor Zegras and Carl Grundstrom scored for the Flyers, who finished their six-game homestand with a 2-2-2 record.

Flyers goaltender Sam Elson made the only two saves in overtime, on Gostisbehere’s shot and on veteran Jordan Staal with about 10 seconds left. Elson finished with 18 saves.

Philadelphia missed all four of its attempts in the shootout before Black beat Elson to end the game.

The Flyers are off to one of their best starts of the season. Brink moved at the blue line and fired a shot over goalie Peter Kochetkov’s glove for a 1-0 lead.

Konecny ​​passed a backhand pass through the penalty area to the charging Zegras, who scored the ball, 2-0.

The Hurricanes tied the game in the second inning. Midway through the game, Gostisbecher smoothly intercepted a pass attempt and passed to Ehlers, whose wrist shot sailed over Elson’s glove.

Nikishin passed a pass to Mark Jankowski, but the puck skirted Philadelphia center Noah Cates’ skate and slid past Ersson, making it 2-2.

Jarvis gave Carolina a 3-2 lead with 7:34 left, but Grundstrom tied the game on a breakaway 17 seconds later.
