American voters are divided over whether President Donald Trump is handling his job better than former President Joe Biden, a new poll shows.
The latest Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released on Monday shows that 51% of American voters say Trump has performed worse as president than his predecessor. Forty-nine percent said Trump was doing a better job than Biden, down from 53% in December.
The results were largely split along party lines, with 87% of Republicans and 15% of Democrats saying Trump was doing a better job than Biden. 85% of Democrats and 15% of Republicans said Trump performed worse than Biden. Fifty-six percent of independents say Trump is doing worse than Biden, while 44% say he is doing better than Biden.
Overall, 46% of voters said Trump performed worse than they expected. Only 28% said his performance was better than expected, and 26% said it was as good as expected.
The poll also showed that Trump’s approval rating fell to 45% in January. That’s down slightly from his 47% approval rating in December, polls show.
The poll also asked respondents whether Trump was doing a better job handling the economy than Biden. Trump was elected largely to address affordability, jobs and inflation, but his approval ratings on those issues have been low for months.
Polls show voters believe the Trump administration is more responsible for the current economic conditions than the Biden administration. Sixty-three percent said the economy owes much to the Trump administration, while 37% said the same thing to the Biden administration.
53% say the economy is worse under the Trump administration than under the Biden administration. 47% say the economy is in better shape under Trump, down from 50% who said the same in a December poll.
The poll was conducted among 2,000 registered voters on January 28 and 29. Its margin of error is plus or minus 1.99 percentage points within a 95% confidence interval.
