Ipswich sign Sunderland midfielder Neil on loan

Championship contenders Ipswich Town have signed midfielder Daniel on loan from Sunderland until the end of the season, when he will leave the Black Cats.

The 24-year-old Neil helped Wearside advance to the Premier League through the play-offs last season, making 47 appearances in the league and scoring two goals.

He has failed to retain a regular spot in the top flight this season, playing just three games as a substitute and will leave Sunderland when his contract expires this summer.

Neil, who was born in South Shields, has made 201 appearances for the Black Cats since making his debut in September 2020, scoring 12 goals.

“I’ve been at Sunderland for a long time and it’s been an incredible chapter in my life and career, but I’m now ready for the next chapter,” Neil told the Ipswich club website.

“After much consideration, it was clear that Ipswich was the perfect fit.

“The way the coach wants to play and the way I like to play are basically the same.”

Sunderland sporting director Christian Speakman added that Neil left a legacy at his hometown club.

Speakman said: “He always stepped up in difficult times, took on challenges, worked hard to become a significant player and then actively used his influence to raise standards on and off the pitch, ultimately leading his boyhood club back to the Premier League.”

Ipswich are in third place after losing to Sheffield United on Saturday, having won four games as they seek an immediate return to the top flight after being relegated last season.

Neil is Town’s second signing of the transfer window, following the arrival of former Bristol City winger Anis Mehmedi last week.
