(Corrected title and paragraph 1 to say Intel is one of the major customers, not the first)
Dec 8 (Reuters) – India’s Tata Electronics has identified Intel as a potential customer for its upcoming chip factory, in a possible sign of the U.S. chipmaker’s confidence in India’s manufacturing ambitions.
The electronics manufacturing arm of the 156-year-old Tata Group is investing about $14 billion to build India’s first semiconductor manufacturing plant in Gujarat and a chip assembly and testing plant in Assam.
Despite initial setbacks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing India to compete with global semiconductor powerhouses such as Taiwan, aiming to make India the world’s chipmaker.
Intel and Tata Electronics will also explore opportunities to rapidly expand AI PC solutions for the Indian consumer and enterprise markets, which they said they expect to become a top five global market by 2030.
