India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in Sunday’s final to claim a record third T20 World Cup title.
India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first team to win back-to-back titles after winning it in 2024, and the first team to win the World Cup three times (2007, 2024, 2026).
Team New Zealand won the coin toss and were voted first place. However, Abhishek Sharma’s return to form, a record-breaking fifty (52 off 21 balls, including six fours and three sixes) and his 98-run stand with Samson left the New Zealanders regretting the decision. Samson then completed a stand-up century with Ishan Kishan (54 off 25 balls with 4 boundaries and 4 sixes) to lead India past the 200-run mark in the 16th over. After a brief slowdown, Shivam Dube (8-ball 26*, including 3 fours and 2 sixes) scored some valuable runs to take India to 255/5, the highest total in a T20WC final.
In a 256-run run chase, Axar Patel (3/23) and Jasprit Bumrah (4/15) reduced the New Zealanders to 72/5, although Tim Seifert (52 off 26 balls, including 2 fours and 5 sixes) fell short of a half-century. Despite a brief partnership between Daryl Mitchell (17) and captain Mitchell Santner (43 off 35 balls, including 3 fours and 2 sixes), India kept attacking with wickets and New Zealand managed to score just 159 runs.
