Seafood sold in NY recalled for possible norovirus contamination: FDA

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Restaurants and food retailers across the United States are being warned that seafood harvested between February 13 and March 3 may be contaminated with norovirus.

Norovirus, sometimes called the stomach flu or stomach bug, is a highly contagious virus that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

The recall includes Manila clams harvested by the Rumi Indian Business Council from the Port of Drayton, Washington. The clams are shipped to restaurants and retailers in New York, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

Restaurants and retailers are urged to dispose of the recalled products. Restaurants are also warned that shellfish can be a source of pathogens and that cross-contamination can occur with food processing equipment.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache and body aches may occur 12 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus.

Vomiting and diarrhea can also lead to dehydration. People infected with the virus get better within one to three days but can still spread the virus for weeks to come, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

treat

There is currently no specific drug to treat norovirus. The CDC says antibiotics are ineffective because they target bacteria, not viruses.

Consumers with symptoms of norovirus infection should contact their healthcare provider.
