First up is Fox: A man accused of shooting a South Carolina lawmaker in the chest during an early morning traffic stop has been identified as a criminal illegal immigrant who had previously been deported and convicted of a felony illegal reentry, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said.
Homeland Security officials told Fox Digital News that Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies responded to a call of shots fired on John’s Island shortly after 9 p.m. on February 10.
They were unable to find the suspect, who was later identified as Floriberto Perez-Nieto, an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
Deputies received another call around 3 a.m. the next morning from the same person saying Perez-Nieto had returned to the area.

“This criminal illegal alien illegally obtained a firearm and nearly killed a law enforcement officer,” Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital. “Thankfully, the officer’s body armor saved his life. This officer and his family could have had a completely different and tragic ending.”
Authorities have not released the identity of the deputy who was shot.
Perez-Nieto was previously arrested for illegally entering the United States from Mexico on an unknown date and location without being inspected by immigration officials, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
It is unclear when Floriberto Pérez Nieto illegally crossed the U.S. border.
