‘I don’t have to think, players do’: Ashish Nehra’s message to Gujarat Titans

New Delhi: Gujarat Titans will be participating in the Indian Premier League for the fifth time. The team debuted in 2022 and won the coveted title in Hardik Pandya’s first season as captain. However, they have been unable to replicate this success since then.

Still, head coach Ashish Nehra remains confident of the turnaround this year, stressing that the team’s focus remains on competing and winning.

“I don’t think we need to think differently this season. [Sochna mujhe to kuch nahi hai. Inko hai, khelna inko hai, meine toh bahar baithna hai]. Actually I don’t have to think about it, the players do too. They have to think. They have to play; I sit outside,” Nehra was quoted as saying in a Gujarat Titans press release.

“Our mentality has been clear from day one, we’re not here to compete, we’re here to compete and win. With a new team, it’s easy to think it might take time, but that’s never been our approach,” he said.

After winning the title in 2022, Gujarat Titans once again performed well in 2023, reaching the finals of that edition before losing to the Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling match.

They endured a disappointing 2024 season and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

However, in 2025, the Shubman Gill-led team bounced back and entered the playoffs, but lost to Mumbai Indians in the elimination round.

Talking about captain Gill and the team, Nehra said: “You are talking about a captain (Shubman Gill) who has been with the team from day one and has seen the journey. I don’t think we will do anything different this season.”
