Remains discovered during the ongoing search for a tourist who disappeared in the Tasmanian wilderness nearly three years ago have been tentatively identified as belonging to the missing woman.
Celine Cremer, a 31-year-old Belgian tourist, was last seen in Waratah, a historic mining town on the border of the Tarkin rainforest. Officers believe she then drove to Philosopher’s Falls, where she went on a “brief bushwalk” before disappearing.
Although there was no trace of her for years, everything started to change in December 2025 when her phone was discovered. Soon after, human remains were discovered near Philosopher’s Falls, and over the next few weeks, more remains and items belonging to Kramer were discovered.
Tasmania Police said in a press release on Thursday, February 26, that the remains found near Philosopher’s Falls “have been tentatively identified as belonging to missing Belgian woman Celine Cremer”.

Tasmania Police Commander Nathan Johnston said authorities had received “compelling evidence” that the remains belonged to Kramer.
“Tasmania Police extends its sincere condolences to Ms Kramer’s family and loved ones,” Johnston said in a statement. “While this interim confirmation will not alleviate their loss, we hope the outcome will provide them with some degree of clarity and closure.”
After the news broke, Amelie Cremer, the missing woman’s sister, posted on Facebook (translated from French) that the update was a “relief” for her family after nearly three years of “endless waiting.”
“After all this time, Celine can finally come home. She will be able to rest in peace, surrounded by the love that has never left her,” the sister said.
“Celine, we have never forgotten you,” the sister continued. “Not a day, not a second. Your absence has left a huge void, but your smile, your energy and all the love you gave us lives on in our hearts. Today we keep you close to us.”

Kramer was reported missing by friends nine days after she was last seen, but although her car was located near Philosopher’s Falls the next day, she was nowhere to be found.
Search teams searched for her for the next two weeks, but then dangerous weather began to threaten their efforts.
The first new sign of Cramer came more than two years later, on December 13, 2025, when a private search team discovered her phone.
Adventure film producer Rob Parsons told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that discovering Creamer’s phone after that period was an incredibly emotional moment.
“I don’t think there’s dry eye in the area,” Parsons said.
Less than two months later, a hiker discovered human remains near Philosopher’s Falls and immediately contacted the police.
Police said in a statement at the time that a pathologist examined the remains and determined they were human, but a formal forensic analysis was needed to determine whether the remains belonged to Kramer.

Two days after the discovery, more remains and a fleece jacket were found in the same area, and due to the “location and nature” of the items, it is believed the remains are linked to what happened to Kramer.
Then, on February 10, Tasmania Police said they found five more bones, two teeth and a Honda car key.
“Police have today officially confirmed that the car key belongs to Celine,” Tasmania Police Commander Nathan Johnston said at the time. “The search conducted over the past two days was thorough and methodical, with many items located beneath debris embedded in the river bed.”

Until the remains are officially identified, police say their top priority right now is to bring closure to Kramer’s loved ones.
Police said on February 6: “Our priority is to restore as much of the situation as possible, to gain a full understanding of what happened and to help provide answers to Celine’s family. This remains at the heart of this operation.”
In a press release Thursday, Johnston thanked community members for their “support and interest” in Kramer’s case and acknowledged the “extensive effort by search and rescue personnel, partner agencies and volunteers that invested significant time and resources throughout the many phases of the search.”
He added that the local coroner “will formally determine the identity of the remains.”
