Microsoft will stop sending over-the-air security updates to devices running Windows 10 on October 14. After that, users will either need to upgrade their laptops or PCs to Windows 11 or continue using older Windows 10 versions, which may contain some undiscovered security vulnerabilities. Last year, the US tech giant announced plans for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU). Users enrolled in the program will continue to receive security updates until 2026. But users still have the opportunity to update their devices (if eligible) to the latest version of Windows 11.
How to upgrade your computer to Windows 11 (recommended)
There are several ways for users to upgrade their devices to Windows 11. Microsoft recommends that users wait until Windows Update notifies users that the upgrade is ready to install. However, users can also manually check whether their device can be upgraded.
- choose start > set up > Updates and security > Windows Update. Alternatively, you can click Windows Update shortcut.
- click Check for updates button. (It is important to note that if there is an update available for the current version of Windows, users may have to install that update first. For example, if there is a newer firmware update for Windows 10, people may have to install that update before upgrading to Windows 11. After that, they will have to restart the process.
- Once your machine is ready, Windows 11 is ready to install.
- Click Download and install button to start the process.
- A software license terms prompt will be displayed. The user must click Accept and install button.
- The Windows Update page will automatically refresh and the status will update to show the Windows 11 upgrade progress.
- Once the Windows 11 download is complete, the device will prompt the user to restart the device. Click Restart now button.
- The computer will restart several times before the Windows 11 installation process is complete.
- Your laptop or PC should start automatically with Windows 11 installed. The user can then log into the device and continue using it as usual.
