Screen sharing is an extremely useful tool that can come in handy when giving presentations, viewing content on a larger screen, showing photos from a recent vacation, or helping loved ones troubleshoot their devices. Therefore, screen sharing is a powerful tool for communication and collaboration. Luckily, screen sharing support is available on both Android and iOS devices.
While the process for the former is as simple as clicking a switch in Control Center, the latter comes with a few caveats. So if you’ve ever wanted to share your iPhone screen but didn’t know how, our step-by-step guide will help.
How screen sharing works on iPhone
Screen sharing works differently on iPhone than on Android. AirPlay is Apple’s proprietary technology that allows you to wirelessly stream music, photos, videos, and mirror your iPhone screen to a compatible device. For some operations, such as sharing the screen on FaceTime, protocols such as SharePlay can also be used.
This outputs the video feed of your iPhone screen to an external device, allowing the recipient to see exactly what you’re seeing, including all actions, in real time.
What you need to share your screen on iPhone
- An iPhone running the latest version of the iOS operating system
- Compatible device for outputting content. It could be an Apple TV, an AirPlay-compatible smart TV, or a Mac running the latest version of macOS.
- Wi-Fi network for devices to discover and interact with each other
How to share screen on iPhone (using AirPlay)
- Make sure your iPhone and Apple TV/AirPlay compatible device are on the same Wi-Fi network
- On iPhone, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen (on Face ID models) or swipe down from the bottom (on Touch ID models) to bring up Control Center
- Select the Screen Mirroring switch and it should appear as two overlapping rectangles. If the icon doesn’t show up, you can add a screen mirroring toggle by holding Control Center and selecting Add a control options.
- Select your Apple TV or AirPlay device from the list
- Now, enter the four-digit AirPlay code displayed on your Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible device when prompted.
- Your iPhone screen should now start mirroring on the device. Repeat steps 1-3 and select Stop mirroring Stop screen sharing.
How to share your screen on iPhone (using SharePlay)
- Start an audio or video call with the person you want to share your screen on FaceTime.
- Once the call is connected, tap the screen to display call controls and access the sharing menu
- looking for Share content option and click on it. It should look like a rectangle with a character icon.
- A menu will appear confirming whether you wish to share your iPhone screen. choose share my screen.
- After a three-second countdown, the recipient will be able to see your iPhone screen.
- To stop screen sharing, return to FaceTime and select Stop sharing options.
