The snow-covered lake provided a shocking contrast to the violent and deadly tornado that ripped through southwestern Michigan on Friday afternoon.
The tornado touched down less than 200 kilometers from the Canadian border, causing severe damage to the affected communities.

National Weather Service meteorologists confirmed Saturday that the tornado would receive at least an EF-3 rating, making it the earliest violent tornado on record in Michigan since 1950.

The tornado destroyed many homes and threw vehicles great distances, killing at least three people. Photos from an ongoing survey by the NWS showed that some homes had their slabs swept away and experts estimated wind speeds could reach 240 km/h or more.
How did such a powerful tornado unfold in such an unexpected location? After all, a tornado passed over a snow-covered lake, which isn’t typically a prime setting for severe thunderstorms, let alone a storm of this size.

Forecasters with the U.S. Storm Prediction Center (SPC) on Friday issued a marginal risk (1/5) for severe weather in southern Michigan, reflecting a low risk for isolated severe thunderstorms.

A warm front approaches the region, causing temperatures and humidity to rise sharply, providing fuel for thunderstorms in the area.
Strong wind shear in the lower atmosphere helped spin a thunderstorm in southern Michigan. Boundaries like warm fronts can act like focusing mechanisms to enhance rotation in thunderstorms.

Michigan is no stranger to tornadoes. Over the past few decades, the state has averaged about 13 confirmed tornadoes per year.

Climatology shows that in early March, tornadoes are most common east of the Mississippi River into near Georgia.
