As Mark Pope begins his second postseason as Kentucky men’s basketball head coach, the Courier Journal breaks down his contract value and performance incentives ahead of the NCAA Tournament.
Pope led the British team to the Sweet 16 last season and received an automatic one-year contract extension. His current contract with the Wildcats runs through March 31, 2030. Pope’s base salary is still $400,000, with the majority of his annual salary coming from media and endorsement obligations (media and endorsement amounts are $4.85 million in 2025-26 and will increase by $250,000 each year through 2029-30.) His total salary for the current contract year (not including any postseason incentives), is $5.25 million.

UK also offers Pope “standard employee benefits,” including a health plan, life insurance, dental insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance and long-term disability, as well as time off subject to athletic director approval. The University pays membership dues to a “mutually agreed upon country club,” up to 30 hours of personal air travel per contract year, and a choice of two vehicles or a car allowance. The UK spends 10% of Pope’s annual salary on retirement plans, and Pope contributes 5%.
Pope is permitted to engage in external activities authorized by the University and must provide written details to the UK President and AD at least once a year. He will also be able to use UK facilities to host basketball camps.
In addition, Pope receives “20 premium, lower-level tickets” for every men’s basketball home game, 10 tickets for every away and playoff game, eight tickets for every football home game, and four tickets for every women’s basketball home game.
If the UK fires Pope without cause, the UK will owe him 75% of his base salary as well as media and endorsement fees “for the remainder of his unexpired term.” If Kentucky fires him on April 1, UK will owe him about $17.625 million per month (75% of the $23.5 million remaining on the contract), assuming Kentucky doesn’t advance to the Sweet 16 again and earn him another automatic one-year extension. However, there is a part of Pope’s contract that obligates him to find employment to relieve his obligations to the university.

If Pope left under the same circumstances and Mitch Barnhart remained as Kentucky athletic director, Pope would be owed £7.755 million (33%). Barnhart recently announced that he will retire in June after 24 years in the UK. If Pope had given notice of termination after Barnhart retired, Pope would have owed only 20%, or $4.7 million.
