Warner Bros. has confirmed that the “Hogwarts Legacy” sequel will have narrative ties to HBO’s current “Harry Potter” TV series. David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, said in an interview published on Tuesday that the studio behind the game has been coordinating with the development team of the Max Original series based on the Wizarding World IP. Haddad said a “Hogwarts Legacy” sequel remains a “very important priority” for Warner Bros., echoing comments made by Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels in September.
Hogwarts Legacy sequel will tie into Harry Potter series
In an interview with Variety, Haddad said that the huge success of “Hogwarts Legacy” has prompted Warner Bros. to vigorously develop the Harry Potter IP through new HBO series, video games and peripheral products. The executive confirmed that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel currently in development will have ties to the Harry Potter Max TV series. Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software has reportedly been “reconciling” some of the big-picture narrative elements in the game’s sequel with those from the Harry Potter HBO series.
Haddad reiterated that a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is a “very important priority” for Warner Bros., as the first game signaled the series’ potential. “We’ve known for a long time that fans are looking for more in the world, so we spent a lot of time thinking about that,” Haddad told the publication. “Others in the company are very curious about the Hogwarts legacy we helped unlock last year,” he added.
In September, Warner Bros. Discovery Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels said that a direct sequel to Hogwarts Legacy was a major goal for the studio over the next few years. “Obviously, the successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most important priorities in the coming years,” Weidenfels reportedly told the Bank of America 2024 Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference at the time.
Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world action-adventure game that tells an original story set in the world of Harry Potter, is a major success for Warner Bros. Games. Variety reports confirm that as of October 2024, the game has sold over 30 million copies. “Hogwarts Legacy” was the best-selling game of 2023, with 22 million copies sold by the end of the year.
The Harry Potter HBO series announced last year will be based on the seven Harry Potter books, ushering in a new era for the series. According to reports, the show will run for ten years and will be released on HBO in 2026.
The Hogwarts Legacy sequel, on the other hand, does not have a firm release schedule. However, Warner Bros. Games continues to release other games based on the Harry Potter IP. In September, the studio released Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a game focused on the magical sport of the Wizarding World, across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X.
