High school competitive cheer: Olympus girls, Maple Mountain co-ed capture first 5A state titles (+photo gallery)

There’s some new steps at the top of the 5A cheerleading pyramid following Wednesday night’s state championship game.

Olympus was the 5A girls state champion, while Maple Mountain was the 5A coed state champion.

This is the first time both teams have won state championships since the UHSAA officially began sanctioning cheerleading in 2023.

“This team is special. It was a rebuilding year for us and we faced adversity all season long – setbacks, injuries and challenges. No matter what happened, they continued to stay focused, trust the process, and ultimately their persistence paid off. We are blessed to be the 2026 state champions,” said Olympus coach Haley Castle.

Salem Hills had won the all-girls state championship each of the past three years, but Olympus denied the Skyhawks their third straight title. Fremont ended up finishing second in the women’s division, with Mount Salem finishing third.

Olympus was the only team to place in the top three in all three categories (dance, cheerleading, acting).

In the coed division, Cedar Valley won last year’s state championship but now competes in Class 6A. That opened the door for Maple Mountain, which narrowly defeated Northridge for the championship.

Box Elder finished third.

Maple Mountain won first place in the acting category and second place in the dance category. Despite not finishing in the top three in the cheer category, it still took home the title.

Northridge placed in the top three in all categories, including winning the dance award. Box Elder took first place in the cheer category.
