Helldivers 2’s ‘Escalation of Freedom’ Update Announced, Will Add Higher Difficulty, New Enemies and More

Helldivers 2 is getting its biggest update yet, including new enemies, higher difficulty levels, new mission objectives, and more coming on August 6th. Published on the PlayStation Blog on Tuesday alongside a new trailer, the Freedom Level Up update will be the biggest update yet for the online shooter. The free update will also add larger enemy outposts, as well as increase the difficulty.

Developer Arrowhead Game Studios has detailed all the new content coming to Helldivers 2 in its August Free Upgrade update. The major update is expected to be released six months after the game launches, and is said to have taken player feedback into account. While Helldiver 2 regularly receives content drops, the new update will be the biggest yet.

Helldivers 2 update adds higher difficulty

Helldivers 2 has nine levels of increasing difficulty. The new update will add 10 difficulty levels to the combat, promising the most “unforgiving” hell-diving experience possible. CR10: Super Hell Dive will bring better rewards in addition to increased challenge.

The updated mission variety has also been improved, including new mission objectives, larger enemy outposts for Terminids and Automaton, and new Super Sample rewards. The studio confirmed that in addition to Super Helldive, the new mission objectives will also be playable on lower difficulty levels.

New enemy types, quality of life changes

The free upgrade update will also bring new enemies, adding the Impaler, a popular enemy type from the first game. The new Charger variety also joins the Terminid ranks. The Spore Charger’s location on the map will not be clear until the player encounters it directly. The update will also add Terminid Alpha Commander, an improved, larger Brood Commander that can summon other bugs for backup. Robots also get a new enemy type: Rocket Tanks.

Arrowhead Game Studios has also made changes to team kicks to address the grief kick issue in the game. In the new update, when a player is kicked, they will spawn into a new game session as a host and inherit the team’s loot from the previous session. All loot can be picked up before evacuating the planet.

The studio is also promising some quality-of-life changes in the major update, including fixes to the social menu to make hell diving with friends smoother. The free update will be released on PS5 and PC on August 6th.
