Guests bitten at Myrtle Beach hotel ‘infested’ with bed bugs, lawsuit claims

Guests at a Myrtle Beach hotel were bitten by bed bugs, according to a new lawsuit.

People staying at a Myrtle Beach hotel were bitten by bed bugs, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Horry County.

Two adult residents of Horry County and four minor children were staying at the Diplomat Motel at 608 N. Ocean Blvd. when they notice a bite. The lawsuit alleges that they stayed at the hotel between January 17, 2025, and April 24, 2025, and were bitten by bed bugs while sleeping.

Residents notified hotel management of the bugs on mattresses, bedding and carpets, the lawsuit states.

The hotel did not return calls from The Sun-News seeking comment Friday and would not leave a voicemail.

The lawsuit claims the hotel should have known about the bug infestation and treated the area before the bugs harmed people staying there. The report further asserts that the infection causes “severe and permanent emotional distress, humiliation, mental anguish, humiliation, loss of enjoyment and enjoyment of life,” which requires psychological and psychiatric treatment.

The infections also cost victims money for medical bills and resulted in lost wages, the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit alleges that the hotel committed an unfair labor practice and breached a contract by allowing guests to be bitten by bed bugs, and also asserts claims of negligence, premises liability and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The bug bites caused severe injuries, causing “extreme pain and suffering,” the lawsuit states.

The guests are suing for damages and legal fees.
