Greek government says 7 fans of soccer team PAOK killed in vehicle crash in Romania

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Seven fans of Greek soccer club PAOK were killed in a minibus accident in Romania on their way to Lyon to watch the Europa League, the Greek government confirmed Tuesday.

“I was deeply shocked to learn of the tragic accident in Romania, in which seven young compatriots lost their lives,” said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “The Greek government and our embassy are coordinating closely with local authorities to provide all possible forms of support.

“In these difficult times, I join all Greeks in sending our most sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the PAOK community,” Mitsotakis added. “We all wish the injured a speedy recovery. Our hearts go out to them.”

PAOK communicates directly with the government, coordinates support for families and injured fans, and sends club representatives to Romania.

In addition, fan associations of rival clubs such as Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Aris and others also sent messages of solidarity and condolences.

France’s game is scheduled to take place on Thursday.
