Google Doc Tips and Tricks: How to Make Someone Else the Owner of Your Document

Whenever you create or upload a document on Google Drive, Google makes you the sole owner and editor of the document by default. So, if you want to transfer ownership of a document to someone else so they can easily edit or share it, you can adjust the settings. However, once you do this, you will not be able to transfer ownership back to yourself, and the new owner will be able to remove you and change access rights.

Here’s everything you need to know before making someone else an editor on your Google Docs.

Roles in Google Docs

The owner of a Google Doc can edit, share, delete, remove editor and viewer access, and even invite others to edit or view it, while the editors of a Google Doc can only edit and view the list of editors and viewers. If the owner allows them, they can remove and invite people.

Viewers of a Google Doc can only read it, and commenters can only add comments.

Change the owner of a Google Doc

You can’t change the owner of a Google Doc on an Android device or iPhone, so you have to open it on a laptop or PC.

  1. Open the Google Docs home screen and go to the specific document you want to transfer ownership of.
  2. Now, click share button In the upper right corner of the screen, enter the name or email ID of the person you want to share the document with.
  3. Then, click share. But if you have already shared the document, skip this step.
  4. Now, to change the owner, go back to share options at the top and click down arrow Right next to the person’s name.
  5. Click “Make” owner > Yes and then complete.

That person will now become the owner of the document and you will no longer have the option to change settings.
