Germany, Austria get World Cup luge wins. The circuit comes to Utah this weekend

WINTERBERG, Germany (AP) — Austria’s Hannah Prock and Germany’s Mel Freber both won two medals in the World Cup luge race on Sunday.

Prock won the women’s singles event, with Vrabel finishing second. Austria’s Dorothea Schwarz finished third, her first career World Cup singles medal.

In the team relay event, Freber and the German team won the gold medal, while Prock and the Austrian team finished second. Latvia, in third place, was the only one of the 15 medals awarded over the weekend that was not won by either Germany or Austria.

The U.S. luge team did not compete in Winterberg, instead choosing to stay home and prepare for the World Cup over the next two weeks at tracks in Park City, Utah, and Lake Placid, New York. This weekend’s games are not part of the Olympic qualifying system, another reason Team USA chose to pass.
